Ready to Plant-Almost!

Last weekend, June 13 and 14, volunteers gathered at Ashland Community Gardens at Stone Park to mix soil and build the garden boxes. Nick Novick was able to borrow a Bobcat and haul compost and shale, mix it and dump it into the boxes. While Nick operated the Bobcat, the carpentry crew built and line boxes. Eager gardeners, whose plots were completed, came in to plant. A lot of exciting activity in a small space!

Volunteers Needed, June 20-21

We have another day or two of work in order to finish all the beds so everyone can plant.

Final soil mixing, box filling, and clean up will take place this weekend, June 20-21. Work shifts are planned for 8:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm-5:00 pm each day, though any amount of time is appreciated. Bring your own work gloves, eye protection, closed toe boots or shoes (no sandals), sun screen, and drinking water.

Also, please bring shovels and wheelbarrows, if you can. A Bobcat on Saturday would also be especially helpful.

GOT SOMETHING TO SAY?
JOIN OUR ONLINE FORUM

We've added an online forum to our website. You can use the forum to tell other Ashland residents what's on your mind. Got a gardening question? Perhaps someone will provide an answer. We would like to view the forum as an extension of the garden. Please keep your posts civil; we want everyone to feel comfortable here. To post in our forums, you need to Register for an online account and then you need to Login once you complete our easy registration process.

The forum software is brand new. There are still a few minor kinks. We also plan to add many more features. For example, for our initial release, you cannot include any HTML (web language) in your post. There is also no way to post a link to online content on another web page. Please be patient ... we have lots of plans to make the forum a much richer experience.

We look forward to your contribution.

KIDS LIKE FARMING

In the 1980s it was the roller rink. In the 1990s it was the mall. These days, small community-supported farms are the cool place for suburban youths - and oftentimes their parents - to hang out.

Local farms report a boom in educational programs for younger children and job applications from teens, who say they would prefer to get their hands dirty in soil than take a weekend job in a store or restaurant. more ...
